ProcellaCOR Treatment & Results

Project Overview

On the morning of June 29, 2024, NYS licensed aquatic herbicide contractor SOLitude Lake Management conducted the NYS DEC and NYS APA approved ProcellaCOR aquatic herbicide treatments in both Blairs Bay and Jelliffe-Knight Bays in northern Lake George to control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil.

The permitted application area for Blairs Bay is 4-acres, and a total of 4.2 gallons was applied over that area for a concentration of 7.7 parts per billion. The permitted application area for Sheep Meadow Bay is 3.6-acres, and a total of 4.7 gallons was used over that area for a concentration of 7.7 parts per billion.  For reference, one part per billion equates to one drop in a large swimming pool.

Studied by the US EPA, Canada, the European Union, and every state in the continental US, ProcellaCOR is an aquatic plant growth hormone that has no impact on human or ecological health, and breaks down within hours following application.

Per EPA and NYS product registration:

  • There are no drinking water restrictions following application.  ProcellaCOR is authorized and has been used in public drinking water supplies many times.
  • There are no swimming restrictions following application.
  • There are no fishing restrictions following application.
  • There are no lawn irrigation restrictions.

The Commission will conduct considerable follow-up study of the two demonstration sites, including videography of the treatment areas 30 days and 60 days after treatment, and a comprehensive aquatic vegetation survey of these sites as well in August.  This information will be made publicly available and will inform the Commission and our partners about the efficacy of these efforts and potential future invasive milfoil control projects.

Sampling Procedure

Water samples are being collected at the lake surface and lake bottom at multiple locations at each of the treatment sites. There are five sample locations in Blair's Bay and six in Sheep Meadow (Jelliffe-Knight) Bay.

Samples are collected 1-3 hours, 10-12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours post-treatment.

Those samples are overnighted to a lab for analysis.

Results are expected Friday, July 5th or early the following week.

Plant monitoring will be conducted 30 and 60 days post-treatment, by the Warren County Soil & Water Conservation District. The District will also perform a formal plant survey of both treatment areas in August of 2024.

Water sample results will be posted here as soon as they are available.

Post-Treatment Results

Sample results are available in .pdf format below.

Post Treatment Videos

The Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District (District) observations of the two bays are based on pre-applciation SCUBA diving surveys on June 12th & 18th, and a post treatment survey on July 30th. During post treatment diving in Sheep Meadow Bay, the application appears to have been effective in eliminating Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) at this time in the treatment area. In the videos of Sheep Meadown Bay, you will note the brown and deteriorating EWM plants laying prostrate with various native plants remaining erect. Sections of the treatment site, prior to the application, approached nearly 100% EWM coverage, while other sections had widely scattered to moderate/dense native plant populations. The various densities of EWM and native plants are why you see in the videos that some areas are brown with deteriorating EWM plants and other areas are green with various native plants. In the Blair’s Bay video, the EWM bed in the northern part of the bay is starting to deteriorate and collapse, while turning brown. The EWM bed in the southern part of Blair’s Bay is prostrate with apparently significant deterioration of the EWM plants.

Below are  videos, recorded by the Warren County Soil & Water Conservation District, as part of the documentation of the efficacy of the treatment.
